The gift that keeps on stealing....

Rant time...

OK, so with the coming of the lovely Orphan Law rearing its head to American creative persons out there, one thing has gone ahead and stood out to me more then usual and that is, the ability to refrain from stealing ones ideas for yourself. In other words, Plagiarism. Ever since I could remember I've been dealing with this a lot as I drew pictures all the time. It wasn't until later in 2000-2001 where one of the biggest cases of it showed up at my locker. In my Drivers Education class I had a friend. We'll call him Robbert. Robbert liked my original Manuscript for NEO|ARK when I still called it Glenn's World. Anyways, he liked it so much that he actually took the time to remember my style and characters, and redraw them over with slight alterations and new names. A week later a friend comes up to me with all the drawings he had, and told me "Its time to be more protective of your work." I still to this day have those drawings because first off, its one of the only "fan art" if you would call it that of my characters that someone decided to do without me somewhat involved, asking for it or trading. And two, because it shows me that people are bloodthirsty for something to call their own at times. Anyways, what brings this up is that Today I've been watching some of Adam Sessler's personal "BLOGS" or online video journals. Those close to me know that I haven't had the best relationship when it came to viewing him on television. I'm not sure EXACTLY what did it, but I know it has to do with something with a review over either a RPG, Sonic the Hedgehog or another game I like. Dunno. The point is, that as the internet become a part of my life more and I was able to READ those reviews and topics and see those special reports where he's away from the main cameras, and seriously talking about a given or set issue (I.E AOTS where he was on with Jack Thompson, Sessler's Soapbox, etc...) these little side steps in journalism for him gave me the perspective and incite not only on games, but on him and on the way I view things in life altogether. A game is just a game, If I like something then others opinions shouldn't influence that, etc etc...

Its mid-day. I come back home from Skating and talking with a group of interesting gay 50 year old Germans in the park. (Long story for another time) I turn on my PC and decide to actually USE MY FACEBOOK! and find the Sessler's Soapbox fan listing there. I become a fan because lets face it, I do enjoy hearing what that crazy man has to say, and to make matters worse or best, I left a message that I knew being on Facebook and not on the actual site, they/ he probably won't see but just makes me feel good for saying it. Here it is :

Christopher R. Taylor Sessler's Soapbox: I've been watching X-Play since it was broadcast on TV, and I hated you. However, that was blissful youth and the bad rating on a Sonic the Hedgehog game or some RPG, I don't really remember. Anyways, Years have past and I've heard many of your interviews with Game companies, critiques, and stuff like the Soapbox. I have to say, my view of you has completely change. Keep speaking your mind regardless of the fan boys out there. Your informative and I look forward to hearing some of your sides on topics out there for today's video gamers....or just yourself. Looking forward to more Soapbox! SKETCHFro!

So yea, I then go off to rest and play Persona 4 and when I come back to the PC to start working, I see my Facebook has a little jumping mark. I click and follow and low and behold I find this:

Christopher Marchant Pascarelli Sessler's Soapbox: I've been watching X-Play since it's TechTV days, I would watch this show and The Screen Savers on a daily basis, and the one thing I remember the most when I watched X-Play was how annoying you were on the show, but also how intelligent you are when it comes to gaming, your reviews and your indepth research when you reviewed games helped me steer clear of bad games, that and I enjoyed seeing you get tortured by Morgan every few episodes... but when it came to review time on games you and morgan hit the nail on the head. *I still feel sorry for you that you had to actually play Drake and the 99 dragons or whatever it's called* Anyways I have much higher respect towards you now because your reviews and opinions grew on me, also you've proven to me time and time again that you are in fact a gamer. I also respect you when you have the guts to defend a rating of a game or a topic at hand ex (your defense of giving NO MORE HEROES a 5 out of 5) Keep doing what you do best adam.

...look, I'm one that loves to rant. I'm one that likes that people can have things in common and stuff like that, however come on! Switch out a few elements here and there and you have almost the identical response that I wrote. Everyone has their views and more or less people will share the same opinion but this was just too close in time frame to rule out the questioning possibility that....Maybe you kinda wanted to jump on a bandwagon that wasn't there?

Anyways, the comments are there and if Adam Sessler even reads it or not I'm not sure. I just hope that it won't be thrown out of perspective because of the later comment there and because of the context. (again jumping onto a bandwagon of I hate you but I like you now kinda thing) But then its also makes me more wary or voicing my opinion.....online....or in my Kitchen. I'm not a real sought after person, I've never been and I'm sure that I'll never unravel the mystery of why my Girlfriend loves me so much or why my Mother is such a supportive and reliable figure in my life. Don't know, don't care, just glad that they are there and they do care. The point is that I think that people need to have their own opinions and learn how to express it without a simple copy, paste, edit.

It wouldn't pass in school, so why continue doing it?

That's it, that's my rant. I'll have actual illustrations and news about art and comics next time.
